Dental sealants are a treatment intended to reduce the risk of tooth decay. Adult back teeth have deep grooves on their biting surfaces; which are most vulnerable to tooth decay, due to food collecting in them and being difficult to clean. Dental sealants are materials placed in these grooves to fill them in, creating a smooth surface that is easy to clean. They are placed as soon as the adult molar teeth come through.
